Why This Record Matters
“When Smokey Sings” was ABC’s tribute to Smokey Robinson and became one of the group’s biggest American hits, reaching No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the U.S. dance chart. The recording was produced by Martin Fry and Mark White with Chic co-founder Bernard Edwards, connecting ABC’s polished synth-pop to the soul tradition celebrated by the song. This five-track 12" expands the single with the Miami and Detroit mixes, Bonus Beats, the 7" version, and “Chicago (Parts I & II).”
