Why This Record Matters
Spectrum is Billy Cobham’s debut solo album, recorded after his work with the Mahavishnu Orchestra and built around jazz-fusion, jazz-funk, and jazz-rock. The sessions feature Jan Hammer on keyboards, Tommy Bolin on guitar, and Leland Sklar on bass, with additional appearances by Ron Carter, Joe Farrell, Ray Barretto, and others. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios and remixed at Trident Studios, the album includes the extended fusion piece “Stratus” and closing track “Red Baron.”
Collector Note
This U.S. Atlantic SD 7268 gatefold reissue dates from approximately 1974–1975 and was pressed by Presswell, with lacquer cutting credited to Atlantic Studios. The 75 Rockefeller Plaza label rim text without a Warner Communications reference distinguishes this edition from later Atlantic reissues.
