Why This Record Matters
“Why?” was Bronski Beat’s 1984 follow-up to “Smalltown Boy” and became a UK Top 10 single, continuing the group’s combination of synth-pop and explicitly gay social themes. Written by Jimmy Somerville, Larry Steinbachek, and Steve Bronski and produced by Mike Thorne, the song directly addresses anti-gay prejudice. This 12" pairs the extended version with the longer 7:28 version of “Cadillac Car.”

Collector Note
This is the 1984 UK Forbidden Fruit 12" release, catalog numbers BITEX 2 and 882 014-1, playing at 45 RPM. The supplied Variant 1 runouts are BITEX 2 A // 7 ▽ 420 R and BITEX2 B // 8 ▽ 420 R. “Why?” was mixed at The Town House in London, while “Cadillac Car” was mixed at Right Track Recording in New York.
