Why This Record Matters
Studio Tan showcases Frank Zappa’s ability to combine rock, jazz fusion, orchestral composition, and absurdist storytelling within a single album. Side A is devoted entirely to the 20-minute “Greggery Peccary,” while the second side moves from the concise pop parody “Let Me Take You To The Beach” into two complex instrumental compositions.
Collector Note
Original 1978 US Discreet release pressed at Capitol Records’ Winchester plant, identified by the Winchester rifle symbols in the runouts. Studio Tan was one of several albums issued by Warner Bros. during its contractual dispute with Zappa and contains material originally associated with his unreleased Läther project.
