Why This Record Matters
Originally recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in Hackensack during three 1957 sessions, Gil Evans & Ten was Evans’ first album as a leader and features an unusually textured ensemble including Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cleveland, Willie Ruff, and Jo Jones. Evans combines brass, reeds, French horn, bassoon, and rhythm section across standards and his original “Jambangle.” The sessions arrived during the same period in which Evans was beginning his celebrated large-ensemble collaborations with Miles Davis.

Collector Note
This 2023 Prestige / Craft Recordings CR00674 mono reissue was issued for RSD Black Friday and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI. Kevin Gray remastered the album and cut the lacquers AAA from the original master tapes at Cohearent Audio, confirmed by the KPG@CA inscriptions in the supplied runouts.
