Sundown became Gordon Lightfoot’s commercial breakthrough in the United States, with both the title track and “Carefree Highway” becoming major singles. Produced by Lenny Waronker and recorded at Eastern Sound Studios in Toronto, the album consists entirely of Lightfoot compositions. Its combination of acoustic folk songwriting and country-rock arrangements helped establish Lightfoot as a major 1970s singer-songwriter.
