Why This Record Matters
Phoenix is Grand Funk’s sixth studio album and marked a transition after the band ended its association with producer Terry Knight, with Grand Funk producing the album themselves. Keyboardist Craig Frost joined the sessions, while Doug Kershaw contributed electric fiddle to “Flight Of The Phoenix.” The album closes with “Rock 'N Roll Soul,” which became a Billboard Hot 100 single.

This 1972 U.S. Capitol Records SMAS 11099 gatefold edition was pressed at Capitol’s Jacksonville plant. The supplied Variant 2 Side B runout carries the STERLING stamp and LH inscription associated with Lee Hulko and Sterling Sound.
