Why This CD Matters
Workout captures Hank Mobley at Van Gelder Studio on March 26, 1961, leading a hard-bop quintet with Grant Green, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. The session pairs four Mobley originals with “The Best Things In Life Are Free,” giving the ensemble extended room for improvisation. This CD also adds “Three Coins In The Fountain,” a performance from the session that did not appear on the original LP configuration.

Collector Note
This 1988 U.S. Blue Note CD reissue carries catalog number CDP 7 84080 2 and barcode 077778408024. This edition was glass mastered by Sanyo U.S.A., with Ron McMaster credited for the digital transfer and Michael Cuscuna as reissue producer. Rudy Van Gelder recorded the original session at his Englewood Cliffs studio, while the packaging retains Reid Miles’ cover design and Francis Wolff’s photography.
