Why This Record Matters
Future Shock brought Herbie Hancock’s jazz background into electro-funk and early instrumental hip-hop, pairing his keyboards with Bill Laswell’s production and Grand Mixer D.ST’s turntable work. The platinum-certified album features the Grammy-winning “Rockit,” a landmark recording that introduced scratching and hip-hop production techniques to a broad international audience.
Collector Note
1983 US stereo pressing manufactured at Columbia Records’ Pitman plant, identified by the etched P in both runouts. Both sides were mastered at Masterdisk by Howie Weinberg and carry the stamped MASTERDISK name with his etched HW initials.
