Why This Record Matters
Released in 1976, Secrets continued Herbie Hancock’s exploration of jazz-funk and electronic instrumentation following albums such as Head Hunters and Man-Child. The sessions feature Bennie Maupin, Paul Jackson, Wah Wah Watson, Ray Parker Jr., and James Levi alongside Hancock’s extensive array of keyboards and synthesizers. The album includes “Doin’ It” and a funk-oriented reworking of Hancock’s earlier composition “Cantelope Island.”
