Why This Record Matters
Herbie Mann & Fire Island captures Mann’s late-1970s move toward jazz-funk, soul, and disco, pairing his flute with the dance-oriented Fire Island project. Herbie Mann produced the album, with a large supporting cast including Wilbur Bascomb, Sammy Figueroa, Lew Soloff, and Allan Schwartzberg. The record reflects the period when jazz musicians were increasingly incorporating R&B and disco rhythms into crossover recordings.
