Why This Record Matters
Rock N Roll Animal captures Lou Reed live at Howard Stein’s Academy of Music in New York City, recasting material associated with the Velvet Underground as extended, guitar-driven concert performances. The five-track program includes “Sweet Jane,” “Heroin,” “White Light/White Heat,” and “Rock 'N' Roll,” backed by a band featuring guitarists Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner. Reed and Steve Katz produced the album, with the performance recorded remotely by the Record Plant.

Collector Note
This 1977 U.S. RCA Victor APL1-0472 stereo repress was pressed at RCA Records Pressing Plant, Indianapolis, identified by the stamped I in the supplied runouts. The variant 2 matrices are APL1-0472A-5 on Side A and APL1-0472B-1 on Side B, with additional KK and JJ etchings respectively. This late-1970s edition uses black RCA labels and was issued on Dynaflex vinyl in a gatefold jacket.
