Mike Bloomfield And Al Kooper And Stephen Stills – Super Session (CD, 2003, Columbia / Legacy CK 63406, Remastered Expanded Reissue)

Why This CD Matters
Originally released in 1968, Super Session grew from Al Kooper’s studio collaboration with guitarist Mike Bloomfield, with Stephen Stills stepping in for the second half after Bloomfield departed the sessions. The album combines electric blues, rock, jazz-influenced improvisation, and extended interpretations of Bob Dylan’s “It Takes A Lot To Laugh It Takes A Train To Cry” and Donovan’s “Season Of The Witch.” Bloomfield’s playing dominates the first five tracks while Stills takes the lead-guitar role on tracks 6–9, making the album an early high-profile example of the rock “super session” concept.

Collector Note
This US Columbia/Legacy reissue carries catalog number CK 63406 and expands the original nine-track album to 13 tracks. The four bonus selections include hornless mixes of “Albert's Shuffle” and “Season Of The Witch,” the studio outtake “Blues For Nothing,” and a previously unreleased live performance of “Fat Grey Cloud.” This edition was remastered for its 2003 reissue and carries barcode 074646340622.
