Mongo Santamaria was a central figure in bringing Afro-Cuban percussion into American jazz, soul, and popular music, and this compilation includes his well-known recording of Herbie Hancock’s “Watermelon Man.” The program also features Latin-inflected interpretations of “Cloud Nine,” “Cold Sweat,” “Green Onions,” and “Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay.” Five bonus tracks expand the original compilation, concluding with a 10-minute live performance of Santamaria’s composition “Afro Blue.”

This US Columbia/Legacy remastered reissue carries catalog number CK 63920 and contains 16 tracks. The disc was glass mastered at Sony Music in Pitman under DIDP-100760, and the package includes liner notes credited to Fred Binkley.
