Why This Record Matters
Wave was Patti Smith Group's fourth and final studio album and paired the band with producer and engineer Todd Rundgren. The album includes “Frederick” and “Dancing Barefoot,” along with the group's interpretation of The Byrds' “So You Want To Be (A Rock 'N' Roll Star).” Robert Mapplethorpe supplied the photography and art direction, continuing the important visual collaboration that had accompanied Smith's work since Horses.
Collector Note
This is the 1979 US Arista AB 4221 Hub-Servall pressing, identified by the HUB marking in the supplied Side B runout. Both supplied matrices carry STERLING, documenting lacquer cutting at Sterling Sound, while the Side A runout also carries the gc signature associated with the credited lacquer cutter. This copy includes the original bifold printed insert with Patti Smith photography, lyrics to “Frederick,” a dedication to Fred Sonic Smith and additional credits.
