Why This Record Matters
Peter Gabriel’s third self-titled album, commonly known as Melt, was a major step in the development of his solo career and paired his songwriting with producer Steve Lillywhite and engineer Hugh Padgham. The album includes “Games Without Frontiers,” “Biko,” “No Self-Control,” and “Family Snapshot,” while its distinctive production helped establish the heavily processed drum sound that became influential during the 1980s. “Biko,” written about murdered South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko, became one of Gabriel’s best-known politically focused compositions.

This 1980 U.S. Mercury SRM-1-3848 edition is a Keel Mfg. Corp. pressing, identified by the “53” label designation along with the etched K and ᐉ markings associated with the plant. The supplied SRM-1-3848-AS-K-10 / BS-K-10 runouts also carry stamped STERLING markings. This copy retains the original album credit and lyric insert sheet.
