Why This Record Matters
Purple Rain brings together Prince’s funk, rock, and pop songwriting through “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” and the extended title track. The closing sequence of “I Would Die 4 U,” “Baby I’m A Star,” and “Purple Rain” draws on performances recorded at First Avenue in 1983, subsequently developed with studio overdubs.
