Why This Record Matters
Originally recorded March 7, 1957 at Contemporary’s Los Angeles studio, Way Out West features Sonny Rollins in a piano-less trio with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne. The album includes Rollins’ interpretations of “I'm An Old Cowhand,” “Solitude,” and “There Is No Greater Love” alongside his compositions “Come, Gone” and “Way Out West.” Roy DuNann engineered the original session and Lester Koenig produced it.

This 2009 U.S. Original Jazz Classics OJC-337 / Contemporary Records S-7530 pressing is a repress of the 1988 Phil De Lancie remaster completed at Fantasy Studios. This stereo edition uses the yellow Contemporary Records labels and carries UPC 025218033718.
