Waiata followed Split Enz’s international breakthrough True Colours and continued the band’s shift toward tightly constructed new wave and pop songwriting. The album features Neil Finn’s “One Step Ahead” and “History Never Repeats,” alongside material written by Tim Finn and instrumental pieces by keyboardist Eddie Rayner. Produced and engineered by David Tickle, the album reached No. 45 on the U.S. Billboard 200.

This 1981 U.S. A&M SP-4848 edition has the green/white/grey cover and was pressed at Columbia’s Pitman plant. The supplied Side A runout, P SPO-4848-AS P1 MCA Sh D, carries the Sh signature associated with Steve Hall’s lacquer cut at MCA Whitney Recording Studios, while the stamped P identifies the Pitman pressing. The supplied Side B runout is P SPO-4848-BS P1.
