Why This Record Matters
Gaucho marked Steely Dan’s final studio album before Donald Fagen and Walter Becker entered a lengthy hiatus, and it became one of the most meticulously produced records of their original run. The album features “Hey Nineteen,” “Babylon Sisters,” and “Time Out of Mind,” with a large cast of session musicians supporting Fagen and Becker’s jazz-influenced arrangements. Its engineering earned the 1981 Grammy Award for Best Engineered Recording, Non-Classical.
