Why This Record Matters
The Royal Scam captures Steely Dan’s increasingly studio-focused approach, built around Donald Fagen and Walter Becker with an extensive group of session musicians including Larry Carlton, Chuck Rainey, Bernard Purdie, Michael McDonald, and Timothy B. Schmit. The album includes “Kid Charlemagne,” “Don’t Take Me Alive,” “The Fez,” “Green Earrings,” and “Haitian Divorce.” Produced by Gary Katz and engineered by Roger Nichols with additional engineering by Elliot Scheiner, the album directly preceded 1977’s Aja.
