Why This CD Matters
Composed in 1964, In C became a foundational work of musical minimalism through its modular structure of short repeating phrases performed over a steady pulse. This recording was made at Columbia’s 30th Street Studio in New York in 1968, with Terry Riley leading the ensemble and playing saxophone. The personnel also include Jon Hassell on trumpet, Stuart Dempster on trombone, David Rosenboom on viola, and Margaret Hassell providing the piano pulse.
Collector Note
This CBS CD reissue/repress carries catalog number MK 7178 and the five-digit DADC glass-mastering code DIDC-70341. The supplied matrix/runout is DIDC-70341 2 with no mastering or mould SID codes, and the disc was pressed at Columbia Records’ Pitman plant.
