Why This Record Matters
The Grand Wazoo is one of Frank Zappa’s major early-1970s large-ensemble works, combining jazz-rock and fusion with his increasingly ambitious arranging and composition. Recorded at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, the sessions feature musicians including George Duke, Aynsley Dunbar, Don Preston, Sal Marquez, and Zappa. The album followed Waka/Jawaka and further developed the orchestral jazz-rock direction Zappa pursued during 1972.
