Why This Record Matters
Mr. Gone followed Weather Report’s breakthrough Heavy Weather and continued the group’s late-1970s fusion of jazz improvisation with increasingly prominent synthesizers and electric bass. Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, and Jaco Pastorius form the album’s core, with drummers including Peter Erskine, Steve Gadd, and Tony Williams contributing to the sessions. “Punk Jazz” is a Pastorius composition, while the album also includes Zawinul’s title track and Shorter’s “The Elders.”

Collector Note
This 1978 US Columbia / ARC JC 35358 promotional stereo edition is identified as a Columbia Records Pressing Plant, Pitman pressing. The promotional configuration carries “Demonstration Not For Sale” labeling, and the supplied runouts include the Pitman “P” identification. Mastering is credited to Allen Zentz Mastering.
