Why This CD Matters
Recorded over two nights at Blues Alley in December 1986, this double album captures Wynton Marsalis with his quartet of pianist Marcus Roberts, bassist Robert Hurst, and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts. The set pairs standards such as “Cherokee” and “Autumn Leaves” with extended originals, including the fifteen-minute “Chambers Of Tain.” Its two-disc length preserves the range and pacing of a full club performance from Marsalis’s early career.
Collector Note
This 1988 US Columbia double CD carries catalog numbers C2K 40675 and G2K-40675. The 16-track program documents the quartet’s two-night Blues Alley engagement across both discs. The release credits Roberts, Hurst, and Watts alongside Marsalis.
