Why This CD Matters
Afterburner followed Eliminator and continued ZZ Top’s transformation of Texas blues rock through synthesizers, programmed textures, and the polished production that defined their mid-1980s period. The album reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200, while “Sleeping Bag” became a Top 10 pop hit and “Stages,” “Rough Boy,” and “Velcro Fly” extended the album’s presence on rock radio and MTV. Produced by longtime collaborator Bill Ham and written by Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard, it captures the classic trio during one of the most commercially successful periods of their career.
