🎶 Vermont Artist of the Week 🎶

Vermont Artist Spotlight: ROUGH FRANCIS (Burlington, VT)

Rough Francis is not just another punk band from Vermont — they are part of a living continuum of American underground music.

Formed in Burlington, VT, Rough Francis consists of brothers Dan, Bobby, and David Hackney, the sons of Bobby Hackney, whose band Death was a pioneering force in Detroit punk, recording groundbreaking music in the early 1970s and later gaining recognition as one of punk's true originators.

Rough Francis carries that history forward — not as a tribute act, but as a modern punk band rooted in legacy and resistance, inspiring respect and a sense of purpose in the audience.

A Band Built on Lineage, Not Nostalgia

What separates Rough Francis from most legacy-adjacent bands is intention. They do not recreate their father's sound. Instead, they absorb the ethos that made Death necessary in the first place:

• Independence over industry approval

• Message over marketability

• Volume as expression, not excess

Their music feels urgent because it comes from a place of lived experience — as Black artists in punk, as Vermonters outside major-city music economies, and as musicians committed to authenticity and community, encouraging the audience to feel connected and inspired.

The Sound: Controlled Chaos with Purpose

Rough Francis' sound is hardcore punk distilled to its core elements:

• Driving, stripped-down guitar riffs

• Rhythms built for sweat-soaked basements and small rooms

• Vocals delivered with conviction rather than theatrics

There's an evident influence of early hardcore, garage punk, and classic protest music, but the band avoids retro cosplay. Their songs are direct, concise, and confrontational — built to be felt immediately and remembered afterward.

Key Releases & Listening Path

• Rough Francis (2012)

A raw introduction that establishes their sound and philosophy — loud, minimal, and unfiltered.

• Maximum Soul Power (2014)

A pivotal record that sharpens their attack while deepening their songwriting. This album reflects confidence, momentum, and a broader sonic palette without compromising intensity.

• We're Not From Around Here (2019)

Their most refined and declarative release. Themes of displacement, identity, and resilience come into focus, making this record feel especially relevant in a fractured cultural moment.

Each release documents a band evolving without standing down its edges.

Rough Francis and the Vermont Music Ecosystem

Vermont's music scene has always thrived on self-reliance and community, and Rough Francis embodies that tradition, building their reputation through touring, word-of-mouth, and shared bills rather than hype cycles, directly connecting to Vermont's underground ethos.

They represent a reminder that Vermont's underground is not peripheral — it's vital. The state's smaller scale allows bands like Rough Francis to stay connected to their audience while fostering pride and independence.

Why Rough Francis Belongs at Maple City Music

Rough Francis aligns with the deeper mission behind Maple City Music:

• Honoring musical history that wasn't properly documented the first time

• Supporting artists who value integrity over algorithms

• Creating space for music that challenges, confronts, and connects

This is music meant to be held, played loud, and talked about — the kind of records that spark conversations across generations.

Rough Francis is proof that punk isn't a phase, a fashion, or a moment. It's a responsibility — and in Vermont, that responsibility is being carried forward with purpose.

🎶 Vermont Artist of the Week 🎶

Maple City Music Artist of the Week: Seth Yacavone & His Band

This week, we’re spotlighting one of Vermont’s true musical treasures — a guitarist, songwriter, and storyteller who’s been electrifying stages across New England for nearly three decades: Seth Yacovone.

From his roots in Morrisville and Wolcott to the legendary stages of Burlington and beyond, Seth has built a legacy of soulful expression, technical mastery, and raw, emotional honesty through his music.

The Journey

Seth picked up the guitar at just eight years old and was performing professionally before he could even drive. His sound blends blues, rock, jam, and soul, carrying the influence of legends like B.B. King, Santana, and Frank Zappa — yet distinctly flavored by Vermont’s creative, down-to-earth energy.

Over the years, Seth and his powerhouse trio — featuring Steve Hadeka (drums) and Alex Budney (bass) — have toured the U.S., played thousands of shows, and shared the stage with icons like Ray Charles, B.B. King, Johnny Winter, Dr. John, and Trey Anastasio Band.

Defining Moments

One of the most legendary chapters in Seth’s story came in 1998 when he sat in with Phish at the Worcester Centrum, performing his own song “All the Pain Through the Years” and joining in on “Layla.” Trey Anastasio later returned the favor by sitting in with the Seth Yacovone Band in 2002 — a moment that solidified Seth’s place in Vermont music history.

He’s also a fixture at Nectar’s in Burlington, where his fiery sets and loyal crowds have become the stuff of local legend. In recognition of his impact, Nectar’s even honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award, celebrating his influence on the state’s musical culture.

Albums Worth Spinning

If you’re new to Seth’s sound, here’s where to start:

• SYBlings, Vol. 1 (2025) – The newest release, filled with tight songwriting, vintage tone, and soulful groove.

• Welcome (2018) – A powerful modern showcase of his blues-rock sound.

• Shovel Down (2016) – Heavy, gritty, and electric — pure Seth.

• Standing on the Sound (2001) – Melodic and introspective, highlighting his songwriting growth.

• Dannemora (2000) – Raw early energy from a young artist on fire.

From stripped-down acoustic jams to full-on electric assaults, Seth’s music hits both the heart and the gut.

What Makes Him Special

Seth Yacovone doesn’t just play music — he channels it. His guitar work walks the line between precision and chaos, always emotionally charged and anchored in groove. Onstage, he’s fearless. One minute he’s bending strings with tender subtlety; the next, he’s peeling back the paint with a wall of sound that fills every inch of the room.

It’s that combination — heart, soul, and craftsmanship — that keeps Vermont fans coming back show after show.

Why We Chose Him

At Maple City Music, we believe in spotlighting artists who inspire, elevate, and represent the best of our region’s creative spirit. Seth Yacovone is all of that and more. He’s the embodiment of Vermont music — independent, authentic, and forever evolving.

So whether you’re spinning vinyl, streaming online, or catching a live show, give Seth a listen this week. Crank it up, close your eyes, and let the music take you somewhere only a true artist can.

Vermont Artist Highlight: Robber Robber

Who They Are

Robber Robber hail from Burlington, Vermont, founded by Nina Cates and Zack James (previously collaborating under The Snaz in Brattleboro). Over time, they expanded into a full band, adding Will Krulak (guitar) and Carney Hemler (bass) to flesh out the lineup. Their creative ethos is very DIY — Cates and James drive the visual direction, video work, artwork, and promotion themselves, making the band as much a multimedia project as a sonic one.

Their music leans in between indie rock, post-punk, art noise, and textured atmospherics — you’ll hear tension, release, dynamics, and bold choices in both songwriting and production.

Discography & Key Works

Wild Guess (Released July 26, 2024)

Their debut full-length, Wild Guess, is out on Bandcamp and in physical formats (cassette + digital).

Track highlights include:

• “Seven Houses”

• “Backup Plan”

• “How We Ball”

• “Sea or War”

• “Machine Wall”

The album was co-produced by Benny Yurco (of Grace Potter fame) and Urian Hackney (The Armed / Rough Francis), and was recorded at Little Jamaica Recordings in Burlington.

Critics (like Pitchfork) describe Wild Guess as “pitting airy dreamscapes against raw realities,” mixing rough edges and noise with melodic impulses.

Earlier / Side Releases

Caldera (EP, 2021)

Guy Ferrari (2019)

Singles & Videos: “How We Ball” (pre-album single)

Song “Sea or War” released as a stand-alone track earlier in 2024

Tour & Upcoming / Recent Shows

Here’s what I found on their live activity and near-future appearances:

They also have at least one show scheduled for October: October 7 at Higher Ground, supporting Lightning Bolt.

Although there are currently fewer confirmed dates, their past touring momentum suggests they intend to remain active. It’s also possible that more local/regional shows will be announced.

What Makes Robber Robber Stand Out — Why We Love Them at Maple City Music

Local + ambitious

They’re rooted in Burlington and Vermont’s indie scene, but their ambition and sound reach well beyond state lines. They’re a great example of local acts taking the next step.

Strong aesthetic & identity control

Because they handle much of their visual art, videos, and promotional materials, their branding is consistent and powerful — you don’t just hear Robber Robber, you see them. That helps a lot in creating connection and narrative.

Dynamic, risky songwriting

Their songs often don’t play it safe. They intensify, pull back, distort, reassemble. That kind of creative risk is rewarding for listeners (and gives your audience something intriguing to dive into).

Collaborative ties & scene awareness

Their co-production work with local figures, relationship to Burlington’s creative community, and peer connections signal that they are integrated and invested in the scene, not loosely attached.

Emotional & sonic contrast

Their ability to transition between introspective, fragile moments and full sonic storms makes their body of work compelling on repeated listens.

If you haven’t yet, give Wild Guess a spin. Watch how a quiet moment might turn messy and gorgeous. Stay tuned for new shows!

Maple City Music – Vermont Artist Spotlight: Sir Chloe

“I Am the Dog. I howl. I bite. I love.”

This week’s Vermont Artist Spotlight is all about the electrifying, emotionally raw energy of Sir Chloe—a band born in Bennington, Vermont, now shaking the indie rock scene on a national level.

Fronted by the powerful and poetic Dana Foote, Sir Chloe began as a college composition project and quickly caught fire with the viral hit “Michelle.” Now signed to Atlantic Records, they’ve opened for Beck, Phoenix, and Halsey, bringing sharp songwriting and haunting vocals to every stage.

Why We Love Sir Chloe:

At Maple City Music, we connect with artists who use music to say something real. Sir Chloe’s music cuts deep—it’s fierce, introspective, and unapologetically human. Their sound lives somewhere between alt-rock grit and indie vulnerability, and it hits just right.

Their debut album, I Am the Dog, is a full-body experience. And with their next release, Swallow the Knife, dropping August 22, 2025, this is the perfect time to dive in.

Vermont Artist Spotlight: Sarah Bell

This week, Maple City Music is proud to feature Sarah Bell, a Worcester-based folk/blues singer-songwriter whose work offers more than just melodies; it provides medicine.

With a voice that soothes and lyrics that empower, Sarah Bell’s music invites you into a space of reflection, restoration, and quiet strength. She blends the sounds of classic folk and soul-tinged blues with deep roots in Vermont’s natural rhythms and spiritual energy.

It’s no surprise that her music feels like a balm for the soul.

Why Sarah Bell?

She caught our attention through her recent NPR Tiny Desk Contest submission, a stripped-back, honest performance that brought her storytelling into full view. Her lyrics are raw yet comforting, calling us to slow down, listen inward, and heal.
